Hatch Changing Pad and Scale

The Hatch Changing Pad and Scale epitomizes simple. Although the price is in the nosebleed section, the ease of use and sleek design make up for the dollar signs.

First, it works as, well… a scale. Second, it serves as a changing pad. Even better, your baby won’t mind lying on this scale as it has a foam top. Soft surfaces are definitely far more appealing than hard plastic ones. You may actually get your baby to lie still for a measurement!  Not to mention, this scale:

  • is a modern and aesthetically pleasing place to change your baby’s diapers.
  • works with a smartphone app to track your baby’s growth and feedings
  • measures down to .25 ounces (fabulous for preemies)
  • is a beautiful addition to every nursery that even includes a safety belt

The weighing pad automatically syncs with the app to do all the work for you.  Take a look at all the best baby changing pads on the market.

Issues

As expected, some customers received defective or glitchy models, but the number is quite small compared to how many customers raved about the dual scale/changing pad.

It does not include a screen on the scale for quick access to information. You must use the app to view the weight.

Also, your Bluetooth must be kept “on” for pairing which can drain your phone battery.

Health O Meter Baby Scale

Looking for a more dedicated baby scale? Try the Health O Meter Scale. This scale works for newborns and toddlers but wasn’t designed to hold older children or moms. The scale includes two parts, the main scale, and the baby tray.

The main scale has a white teddy bear for toddlers to stand on. It includes the LCD screen and four buttons, along with indents for the baby tray to lock into place for stability. Babies can sit or lie down on the tray for easy weigh-ins.

The four buttons allow you to zero out, use the hold function, change from pounds to kilos, and turn the device on or off. You will need to purchase a nine-volt battery separately. It includes a baby growth book for tracking your baby’s weight and height. The device measures to the half-ounce for accuracy which works well for assessing breast milk intake.

Issues

Only a few customers ended up with defective or inaccurate models.

Like other baby scales, this one works best when the baby stays still.

Other reviewers complained the scale wasn’t accurate to the ounces.

Beurer Bluetooth Scale

For a slightly higher price than you would pay for a normal scale, the Beurer Bluetooth Scale not only measures but tracks your baby’s growth on both the scale and a smartphone app.

The baby scale comes decorated with cute little elephants to give older babies something to sit and look at. It has a curved weighing platform, and stabilizers for an accurate reading every time.

Another unique feature of the scale is an additional measuring tape that tucks into the side for tracking height. The scale measures up to 45 pounds. You can also toggle between pounds, kilograms, and ounces. The height ruler measures from 1 to 60 inches.

Use the simple buttons on the scale with the Beurer BabyCare app on your smartphone. The data automatically uploads to the app via Bluetooth, and it generates a personalized growth curve. It works with both Android and Apple devices and is easy to use and track your baby’s growth.  It’s a great nursery addition that can be used for several years.

Issues

The higher price is the only issue. This scale offers a lot with a simple-to-use app, and, so far, no issues!

Tanita Digital Scale

The Tanita Digital Scale looks like and has features similar to a hospital baby scale. If you want dependable results and ease of use with a preemie, then you may want this expensive option.

This scale weighs babies up to 40 pounds and reads down to the ounce. It includes an easy-to-read LED display. The baby tray is integrated and dips in like a cradle for your baby’s comfort.  It also includes batteries.

Finally, it has easy on/off buttons and works for cats and small dogs as well as babies. Remove the tray for easy cleaning. It comes calibrated and ready to use to measure your infant’s weight.

Issues

The high price may hurt your bank account. Only a very small percentage of customers found an issue with the integrity of the product.

Overall, customers love this baby scale.

The Unicherry Digital Scale is a scale that you can keep around for years! This multi-function baby scale is able to weigh babies, toddlers, adults, and even pets. In addition, you can measure your baby’s height with the included growth chart.

Features available on this digital baby scale are the hold function (holds weight), zero function, and the option to view weight in lbs, oz, or kg. A large LCD display helps you see the weight easily in dimly lit rooms.

When it’s time to transition this scale to a toddler, simply detach the infant baby tray to reveal a floor scale for standing. This scale is able to read up to 220 pounds, and measures in increments of 0.02 lb / 10g. No worries about having batteries either because the Unicherry Multi-Function Digital Baby Scale includes free AAA batteries.

Issues

Most buyers absolutely love this scale, even for their pets! Some reviews have said that the weight readings were inaccurate, but most don’t mention this as being an issue.

Salter Baby/Toddler Scale

Salter Baby, Toddler, Pet Scale, Perfect Readings for Before and After Feedings, Two in One Function, Also Designed for Toddlers, Multifunctional, Hold Button, 44 LB Capacity

Popularity

The Salter Baby/Toddler Scale is a 21.5″ x 10″ plastic baby scale that features a soft, scooped surface for secure holding as your baby is weighed. It measures in 0.5 oz increments and has a 44 lb. scale capacity.

Two features of this baby scale make weighing a breeze. The first feature is the “hold function” which allows your baby’s weight to remain on the scale screen even as baby wiggles around.  The second is the “zero function” which records a more reliable weight of your baby by subtracting that of the diaper or clothes.

What’s really fun about this baby scale is how it transitions to a toddler scale. By removing the baby tray above, you are left with a toddler scale that looks like a cute bear or mouse! This is a great feature because you can use this scale much longer than if it were only for an infant.

Issues

Parents say this scale is super easy to put together and is a safe way to weigh a wiggling or squirming baby.

Reviews are all over the place on this one, but, overall, the Salter Baby/Toddler Scale is recommended by parents.

Smart Comfort Baby Scale

Smart Weigh Comfort Baby Scale, 44 Pound Capacity, 3 Weighing Modes, Accurate Digital Scale for Infants, Toddlers, and Babies
Price$$
Quality
Popularity

If you want a simple and accurate baby scale, then the Smart Comfort Baby Scale is for you! This is a dedicated baby scale with functions like tare and an auto-shutoff.

It has a large, curved platform for weighing baby in either pounds, kilograms, or even stone. It has a 44-pound weight capacity, so it may be used well into the toddler years.  However, I doubt you will be able to get your toddler to sit still on this scale.

This slim scale comes with batteries for the backlit LCD screen. It gives a very accurate reading, within .10 kg or 3.5 ounces.

Issues

You have to do math with this scale. When in pounds mode, it gives weights such as 10.8 pounds. This is NOT 10lb, 8oz! You have to convert that .8 of a pound into ounces.

The weight reading bounces around if your infant moves, so you’ll have to take your best guess at which weight measurement to take.

Best Multi-Function Baby Scales

Both the MomMed and Ozeri scales can be used by the whole family. The MomMed includes a baby tray whereas the Ozeri scale does not but is able to weigh your pet and luggage too.

MomMed Baby Scale

MomMed Baby Scale, Multi-Function Toddler Scale, Baby Scale Digital, Pet Scale, Infant Scale with Hold Function, Blue Backlight, Weight and Height Track

Like the previous scale, this high capacity scale can weigh babies, children, and parents. However, the MomMed Scale includes a baby bed to weigh baby without having to find out how many pregnancy pounds mom still wears!  When not using the baby bed, take it off and store it when using this scale for those who can stand on their own.

High precision sensors provide accurate readings from 0.1 to 220 lbs to accurately measure your baby’s growth from feedings.  You can use it throughout infancy and even measure your cat or dog. A height measurement etched inside the baby bed allows you to measure length as well.

The sensitive touch buttons include on/off, zero function, hold function, and can switch from kilogram to ounces to pounds. The hold function keeps the display visible, even when your baby is moving, so you can write down the numbers. The baby tray swivels into a locked position on the bottom.

It includes two AAA batteries. Read all the numbers from a large backlit LCD display. The simple white design matches any decor. This small and lightweight scale is highly portable.

Issues

Of course, a few customers ended up with defective units.  This model also requires frequent battery changes since it’s only designed to hold two batteries at a time.

The weight reading can shift as your baby moves around which happens on most scales. Try to keep your baby still while measuring weight. Height measurements are in centimeters instead of inches.

Ozeri Touch Scale

Ozeri Touch 440 lbs Total Body Bath Scale – Measures Weight, Fat, Muscle, Bone & Hydration with Auto Recognition and Infant Tare Technology

If it’s time to weigh in, buy a multipurpose scale ready to measure your baby’s chubby thighs and mom’s too. The Ozeri Touch Scale can measure everyone in the house, including your pet dog Sparky. Even better, you don’t have to place your baby on the scale;  you keep him in your arms.

The sleek black, tempered glass scale includes a blue backlit LCD screen to easily see measurements. It can hold up to 440 pounds including ounces. Also, the scale is easy to use. Press the TARE button, then step on it.  Follow this by stepping on with your baby, and the weight difference will light up.

Finally, 4 high-precision GX sensors ensure correct readings every time. Weigh in either pounds or kilograms, and also determine things like body fat and muscle mass. It uses touch-sensitive buttons and can store up to 8 user profiles.   This is a scale that works past infancy and all the way into adulthood.

Requires 2 x CR2032 batteries and weighs less than your baby at 5.4 lbs.

Issues

A few customers ended up with lemons which can be a frustrating but common occurrence for all electronic devices.

Others found that the ounces were not accurately measured. Some models are sensitive, and give a different measurement each time.

When you first purchase a new scale, step on it three times to make sure it reads correctly. If the numbers do not match up, you may have a faulty scale.

Best Baby Tub Scale

Aquascale Scale and Tub

AquaScale 3-in-1 Digital Scale, Water Thermometer and Infant Tub
Price$$$$
Quality
Popularity

It might sound strange to have a baby scale and tub in one, but the Aquascale Scale and Tub is a great way to save space, and weigh your baby at a convenient time (when he’s already stripped down and contained!).

This item serves three purposes: a baby bathtub, a water thermometer, and a digital baby scale. The tub has a non-slip pad on the back where a smaller baby can lie during the bath. There is also support under the baby’s bottom to keep them from sliding down. Once baby can sit up, you can take out this support, allowing them to sit in the deeper end. It has a drain plug for emptying.

The scale works with or without water. That means you can fill up the tub, press the zero button to tare, and then weigh your baby as they bathe. No screaming, cold infant trying to wiggle off a platform!

The Aquascale has a memory function and can work in both pounds and ounces or kilograms. You can also read the continuously updated bath temps in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Issues

The tub is really big. It certainly takes up a lot more storage space than a regular baby scale would.

You need a large bathroom counter or a big bathtub to place this scale. If you are low on bathroom space, this isn’t the best scale for you.

FAQs – Baby Scales

Why do I need to record my baby’s weight?

Your baby’s weight is a direct measurement of how well your baby is thriving and growing.

Babies lose up to ten percent of their body weight during the first two days of life (source).  At birth, you may notice that some areas of newborn skin look a bit swollen.  As this swelling resolves, fluid is lost from the skin, resulting in the loss of a few ounces of weight.  Babies should regain this lost weight by two weeks old, and then continue to gain at a steady rate.

Losing too much weight is not ideal for infants.  Their weight is measured and recorded at each well visit to be sure they are gaining an adequate amount.  Recording an accurate weight on a home infant scale, however, can help you detect the first sign of a problem with your infant.

How accurate are baby tub scales compared to traditional baby scales?

The main difference between a baby tub scale and a traditional baby scale is how the baby lays while being weighed. Traditional scales allow your baby to lay flat on their back which may read the weight more accurately.

With a baby scale tub, the baby is sitting in a slight recline position so they are not laying completely flat on their back.

How often should I weigh my baby?

Some mothers want to weigh on an infant scale after each feeding to make sure their baby is growing. This may be helpful for failure to thrive or premature babies but is not necessary for the typical baby.

Weigh your baby during the evening at the end of the week. Your baby’s weight should increase roughly 4 to 7 ounces a week.

Some babies gain more, and others put on less. Each baby has a different normal weight

When should I be concerned about my baby’s weight?

If your baby is not gaining any weight for seven days, this could be a cause for concern.

If your baby gains weight but it’s less than expected, this could also be worrisome.

Breastfed infants often have difficulty gaining weight during the first few weeks of life.  Problems with latching, maternal milk production, and technique can all prevent infants from gaining an appropriate amount of weight.  This is particularly common if an infant was born via cesarian section (source).  Poor feeding can also lead to dehydration and neonatal jaundice.

Premature infants are at risk of poor weight gain due to immaturity of the gastrointestinal tract and the skills that are important for feeding (source).  Their birth weights are lower than those of full-term infants, so it is helpful to closely monitor their progress.

Baby’s weights can go through ebbs and flows. Your baby may be in a lull, and next week put on twice the amount!

Keeping track with an infant scale can help you to see if your baby is following his personal normal pattern.   As always, contact your baby’s doctor with any concerns.

Where can I find a baby weight chart?

The CDC offers a variety of charts for baby boys and baby girls. You can plot and follow the percentiles for length and weight as well as head circumference.

Record baby’s weight in a baby memory book!
