If you are looking for a dual-sided mattress that can be adapted for babies or toddlers, the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer Mattress is our top pick. Manufactured right here in the USA, this mattress is made of medical-grade, stretch knit fabric that is durable, water and odor-resistant, and antimicrobial. It can easily be wiped down when soiled and dries quickly. The mattress itself is 27.5″ x 52″ and has a thickness of five inches.

The infant side is firm to provide the highest safety for young babies. As your child gets older, you can transition to the other, softer side of the mattress simply by flipping it over. This helps your child to remain comfortable and ensures that he or she gets the sleep they need. Moonlight Slumber uses only non-toxic materials for its mattress which is free from dangerous flame-retardant materials. This is a high-quality product that will last and continue to keep babies and toddlers safe.

Why We Love It

  • Non-Toxic
  • Medical-Grade Material
  • Water and Odor Resistant, Antimicrobial
  • Dual-Sided (Firm for Infants and Softer for Toddlers)
  • Easy to Wipe Down

Considerations

  • Mattress Begins to Sag in the Middle
  • Overpriced for the Quality
  • Inside of Mattress is Actually Polyurethane Foam

Overall

The exterior of this mattress is made of medical-grade material that is non-toxic and hypoallergenic. However, the inside is polyurethane foam. The SafeSewn seams are bed bug and mite-resistant and made in the USA.

It is easy to clean and wipe down when it gets dirty and has dual firmness to provide varying comfort for babies and toddlers. If you want a solid mattress that can be used for years to come, the Moonlight Slumber mattress might be what you are searching for. Dual firmness allows you to use the mattress in a toddler bed and give your older toddler a more comfortable sleeping surface.

Milliard Crib Mattress

The Milliard Foam Crib Mattress is designed to allow maximum airflow and to help regulate a baby’s sleep temperature. The firm mattress is designed to mimic the conditions in a mother’s womb and help babies sleep better and longer. The Milliard foam core is naturally hypoallergenic and resists mold, allergens, dust mites, and bacteria. The foam is also CertiPur-US Certified meaning it is made without the use of toxic materials.

This 25.5″ x 52″ x 5″ mattress feels like sleeping on a firm cloud with the sturdy memory foam capable of supporting even a full-grown adult. It does not bounce much to keep children from turning their bed into a playground. For a safe, hypoallergenic version, you can’t beat this mattress! There have been issues with the waterproof cover breaking down after several times through the washing machine, but this is easily solved by using a waterproof mattress cover.

Why We Love It

  • Maximum Airflow
  • Keeps Baby Cool
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Mold, Bacteria, Allergen-Resistant
  • Memory Foam
  • Non-Toxic

Considerations

  • Waterproof Cover Does Not Hold Up to Machine Washing
  • Strong Foam Smell Last a While
  • Not Dual-Sided for Switching to a Toddler Bed

Overall

The Milliard crib mattress is hypoallergenic and features maximum airflow to keep babies safe while sleeping. The waterproof cover is resistant to allergens, bacteria, and mold, but is not made to be machine washed. No doubt this mattress will last for a long time provided you keep it covered with a separate mattress pad, otherwise, you may find yourself with a ruined waterproof cover that makes the baby mattress unusable.

This mattress will keep babies cool and comfortable to ensure a good night’s sleep. However, the memory foam may make you wish you could curl up in your baby’s bed for a night. If you are looking for a mattress for a baby who is sensitive to materials and allergens, this is a great choice and will be the most comfortable bed for your baby.

This well-made mattress is an affordable option for anyone looking to purchase a baby crib mattress. Delta’s Twinkle Stars Mattress line has three versions, each with slightly different features. The entire line features the Greenguard Gold certification for low emissions. Delta is also well-known for quality, affordable products for babies and children. Here, we will give you an overview of the three different versions of this mattress to help you decide which one best fits your needs. Each mattress measures 52″ x 27.5″ and has a thickness of six inches.

The lowest-priced Twinkle Stars mattress features a thermo-bonded, polyester fiber core to give babies optimal support while sleeping. The vinyl cover is easy to clean when needed and is waterproof to prevent liquid from soaking into the inner workings of the mattress. Both sides of the mattress are equally firm so it can be flipped if desired without a change in firmness. Square corners ensure a proper, safe fit for all mattresses in this reputable line.

The mid-priced model, the Twinkle Stars Deluxe, also has a waterproof cover that is easy to wipe down, square corners for a secure fit, and a vinyl waterproof cover of the previous model. There are, however, a few significant differences. The first is that the core is made of 162 interlocking coils for a firm foundation that will support your child in any position. In addition to the Greenguard Gold Certification, it also features the CertiPur Certification that ensures the mattress is made of non-toxic materials. The last major difference is the dual firmness on the mattress with a firm infant side and a slightly softer toddler side to accommodate your child for years to come.

The Twinkle Stars Supreme has similar features to the deluxe, but with one major difference. Instead of the vinyl waterproof cover, this version features a woven fabric cover that reduces overheating while your baby is asleep. Though the cover is woven, it has a waterproof backing to keep it clean and dry. It still has the 162 interlocking coils for firmness, Greenguard, and CertiPur Certifications, and the same dual firmness to accommodate both babies and toddlers.

Whichever model you choose, Delta adheres to the crib mattress safety and health standards to keep young children safe. Through their certifications, they assure you that the mattress you are placing your baby on is free of chemical emissions and toxic materials. All mattresses in this line are made in the USA under strict quality standards and fit standard-size cribs. All versions are affordable and will stand up to many years of use in cribs and toddler beds.

Why We Love It

  • Goldguard Certification on All Versions
  • Removable Waterproof Cover
  • Non-Toxic Materials
  • Two Versions Have Dual Firmness for Infants and Toddlers

Delta is well-known for its products for babies and children and continues with their commitment to safety and durability. The mattress is well made but can show indents after a relatively short period of time. This is an affordable option for any budget and is sure to help your baby sleep better. Plus, the dual firmness allows you to use it well into the preschool years until your child is ready for a full-size bed.

The mattress has a woven cotton-blend fabric enhanced with organic material that is breathable on the skin and keeps your baby comfortable. Sealy is one of the top names in mattresses and their crib mattresses reflect their high standards and quality.

The seams stand up to the worst wear and tear and won’t easily come apart. It also has certifications that speak to the safety of its products, especially for babies and toddlers. This mattress will definitely stand up to all the normal baby and toddler wear and tear to last for many years.

Newton Wovenaire VS. Organic Innerspring Crib Mattresses

The Wovenaire is our top choice and is truly innovative from a safety perspective but let’s pause and compare it to the high-quality and more traditional crib mattresses.

While innerspring mattresses also boast the coveted Greenguard Gold certification to set parents’ minds at ease, they have gone out of style and are almost impossible to find. They are worth mentioning though as there are a limited few both new and second-hand. Both styles of mattresses are eco-friendly and made of organic materials. They both have a pretty significant price point which reflects their quality standards. It may be difficult to decide which provides the most safety for your little one. Here are some key comparisons between the two products.

The Newton Wovenaire mattress is made of 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, while the older innerspring mattresses are an innerspring core encased in GOTS-certified organic cotton and an eco-wool quilted cover. Neither mattress has different sides for toddlers and babies, although both mattresses can be flipped over and both sides are able to be used. Most innerspring mattresses have a 10-year warranty against manufacturer defects and the Newton features a lifetime limited warranty against the same. Both style mattresses are breathable and neither is waterproof which keeps babies from overheating, a possible risk factor for SIDS.

Innerspring mattresses differ from the Newton in several key ways. The innerspring mattress is one of the biggest differences and the Eco-wool acts as a natural flame retardant for added protection. However, the springs make this mattress bulkier than some of its competitors. The wool is also naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and dust mites. However, the wool does produce a smell that many people find offensive.

The Newton Wovenaire is made of the all-natural core, mostly of air. The mattress cover comes in different colors and all of them are breathable. All parts are washable, even the inside of the mattress. All materials are hypo-allergenic and the breathability of the entire mattress prevents a build of humidity and moisture. The Newton company will also recycle the mattress for you when you are finished with it. This mattress is also very lightweight due to the materials used.

All things considered, both styles of mattresses are great choices if you can afford the higher prices. They are both wonderful, organic mattresses you can feel good about laying your baby on at the end of each day. With no worries about the toxic fumes your baby may be inhaling, you will both sleep much better with one of these mattresses.

Overall

Safety is always at the forefront of our minds when we have little ones. The Newton Wovenaire is one of the few mattresses that doesn’t use foam or innerspring, although it is classified as a foam mattress. This fully organic mattress will help set your mind at ease as your little one sleeps. It may not make your baby sleep through the night but it will keep her safe when she is asleep.

The Newton company also uses natural materials that are 100% recyclable to reduce the impact on the environment. It may be annoying to have to wash a soiled cover each time instead of just wiping it down, but knowing your baby can breathe in any position is well worth the cost. This mattress is completely washable and will last for many years and even though many children, if well taken care of.

Crib Mattress Comparison

The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Popularity Score reflects how often readers click on and buy the product. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.

Types of Baby Mattresses

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses have coiled springs that support a baby’s weight. The higher the number of springs, the more supportive the mattress will be. These types of mattresses last longer and are more durable than other types. The thickness of the coils can also increase or decrease the durability of the mattress. Innerspring mattresses always have foam padding of some kind that creates a cushioned barrier between a baby and the coils. Due to the materials used, innerspring mattresses are usually more expensive and are considerably heavier than other versions.

Foam

Foam mattresses are made of different types of products ranging from organic to non-organic. Most foam mattresses are made from polyurethane, which can emit toxic chemicals, however more and more foam mattress brands are creating organic foam mattresses that are better for babies and the environment. Check the materials to see if the baby crib mattress you are looking at is truly organic or not. You should also look for certifications that can tell you if the mattress has been tested for chemical emissions and toxic materials.

One of the most important things to watch for in a foam mattress is the density. A denser foam will be firmer, which is a necessity in crib mattresses. Foams do break down easier so foam mattresses may not last as long as innerspring mattresses. Foam mattresses are often less expensive because the materials are cheaper. This is not true in many truly organic foam crib mattresses, though, which maybe some of the most expensive on the market.

Safety Guidelines

When looking for a crib mattress, it might be tempting to pick up one of the least expensive. After all, baby equipment is expensive and you need so many things. However, a crib mattress could be one of the most important pieces of equipment you will purchase. A great crib mattress must be safe above all else, but there are features that make it even safer for the smallest, most precious people in our lives.

The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommends always putting babies to sleep on their backs on a firm surface to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Firmness

Crib mattresses must be firm, to prevent babies from rolling around into tight corners or soft spots in the mattress. Memory foam is not recommended because babies can become trapped in the soft indents and have trouble breathing. It is important to find the right balance between allowing your baby the comfort to sleep soundly while still remaining firm enough to protect your baby while asleep. Even if the mattress feels uncomfortably firm to you, give your baby time to adjust to the firmness as firm mattresses are safer. To test the firmness, Consumer Reports says to push down on the mattress and your hand should immediately spring up. If it does not, then it is not firm enough for your baby.

There are many types of crib mattresses. Always choose a mattress that will correctly fit in your baby crib or mini baby crib. If your mattress doesn’t fit properly, your baby can slip between the crib rails and mattress or roll into a dangerous position and be unable to get out of it. Safe crib mattresses should fit snugly against all edges of the crib, leaving no room between the mattress and the crib railings.

Height

All standard cribs have an adjustable height for the mattress. It is recommended to have it at the highest point for newborns and then lower it as the baby becomes more active and mobile. This is another area that the firmness becomes important so the mattress doesn’t sink and entrap the baby as he or she gets older and begins crawling and pulling up.

Material

Mattress material matters for a variety of reasons. The law requires mattress manufacturers to disclose the materials a mattress is made of. Your baby will be spending a lot of time laying, breathing, and playing on top of the mattress. You want to ensure that there are no toxic chemicals in or on the mattress that will affect your baby’s health. Check to make sure the mattress is made of safe materials and not treated with chemicals like flame retardants that could cause health problems. You also want to look for materials that are naturally mold-resistant and hypoallergenic.

Condition

Purchase a new mattress whenever possible. New mattresses are made following the newest crib mattress safety recommendations and are less likely to have quality issues. A second-hand mattress could be subject to damage, mold and bacteria growth, or outdated materials or standards. If you buy a second-hand mattress or will be reusing one from a previous child, family, or friend, make sure to look for recall notices for the specific mattress. Also carefully inspect and thoroughly clean the mattress before use. If there are rips, tears, or mold, it is best to discard the mattress and find a safer one.

Certifications

A mattress that has certifications has undergone testing from other companies. Although not all certifications equate to mattress quality or reliability, if a mattress has been certified by reputable companies, you can feel at ease knowing it has been tested. Also, read the reviews from actual parents who have used mattresses. Though these aren’t actual certifications, they can guide you in your decision. Ensure that you read good reviews and bad reviews to see if a pattern emerges one way or the other.

FAQs – Baby Crib Mattress

Are all crib mattresses safe?

If you purchase a new crib mattress, it will adhere to all safety standards. Additionally, if there is a safety concern, the mattress will be recalled and won’t be available on the market. You should also fill out the registration card that comes with your new mattress to ensure you are notified if any issues arise in your mattress. However, if you purchase, or are given, a used mattress, you will need to ensure that it meets all safety standards before use, check for recalls, and make sure the mattress is clean, sanitary, and free from mold.

What is the standard size for a crib mattress?

A standard crib mattress is 27 1/4 inches x 51 5/8 and no thicker than six inches as mandated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s crib mattress guidelines. This fits perfectly in a standard size crib and all edges of the mattress should fit flush against all internal edges of the crib. A properly fitted crib mattress ensures that babies cannot get any part of their body trapped between the mattress and crib walls.

Why are crib mattresses so hard?

A firm mattress reduces the risk of suffocation or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) by keeping a baby’s face from sinking into the mattress. If a crib mattress feels comfortable to you, it is most likely unsafe for your baby. Babies will quickly adjust to the firmness of the mattress, even if they don’t seem to like it at first. Give them some time and be consistent with putting them to sleep in their crib.

Can I use a crib mattress in a toddler bed?

Yes, toddler beds are specifically made to hold a crib mattress and help young children transition from a crib to big kid bed. This makes it more economical for parents as well, since they don’t have to buy a different mattress right away. It also means they get more use out of a short-lived piece of baby equipment.

How long are crib mattresses good for?

Crib mattresses don’t have an expiration date, so their longevity depends on the mattress’ quality, durability, condition, and appearance. If you have a used mattress you are thinking of using, inspect it carefully for indents, sagging, broken seams, holes, mold, bugs, or any other issue that would make it unsuitable for reuse. If it is questionable, err on the side of caution and buy one that meets all current safety standards.

Where can I check for recalls on crib mattresses?

Items are recalled all the time for one reason or another. If you register a newly purchased product with the manufacturer, you will be notified in the case of a recall. However, if you are checking a mattress you are planning to reuse, you can check the CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) for recalls.

Is an expensive crib mattress better for my baby?

Higher cost does not always translate into better quality. There are many average-priced crib mattresses that are perfectly safe and durable. Sometimes, with a more expensive mattress, you are paying for a brand name and reputation. Other times the cost is justified by the quality and materials used. If your baby has a medical condition or is sensitive to certain materials, a higher-priced mattress might be the way to go. However, there are many budget and average-priced mattresses that will provide the same level of safety and protection for your baby. Ultimately, the decision is up to you.

How much will a crib mattress cost?

There is a wide range of pricing in crib mattresses, as in most things. There are mattresses that cost less than $50 and others that can cost several $100s of dollars. It depends on what you are looking for. If you are on a budget, you can find a great mattress that will still last for a long time. If materials are your main focus, you can find a high-end mattress made of the material you desire.

Organically-made mattresses will usually cost more than other materials so take that into consideration. There are also many middle-of-the-road mattresses to choose from. So look at your budget, consider that the mattress will only be used for a maximum of 4-5 years, think about what materials, if any, you desire in a mattress, and then shop away!

Things You May Need

Cover/Pad/Mattress Protector

Even if your mattress is waterproof, you may want to put a waterproof cover or pad on the mattress to make clean-up quicker and easier.  There are several different types available. A fitted mattress pad that goes on like a fitted sheet, one that uses elastic loops to secure to the edges, and the kind that only covers a portion of the mattress (like the bottom half that could get messier and harder to clean up after). There are advantages to each of these types.

  • A fitted mattress pad often provides a plush, soft surface for your baby to sleep on. Be careful though that it is not too plush though.
  • Elastic loop pads are lighter and don’t restrict the airflow on the sides of the mattress, where vents usually sit to keep babies cool and comfortable.
  • Partial mattress covers are generally used to keep large messes from soiling the bed. These are handy if you have a baby who wets through their diaper often but you don’t want there to be an added layer under the baby’s head. Or perhaps you have a baby that spits up often and you only need the pad near the baby’s head to protect the mattress.

Pick one that fits your needs and will be easy to change out when needed. In fact, you should probably have two pads, just in case a quick change is required. All mattress pads are made to be used under a fitted crib sheet, which just happens to be the next item on our list.

Crib Sheets

Unlike adult sheet sets, a crib sheet is only one fitted sheet. Babies, and even adults, do not need a flat, top sheet, although they are dangerous for babies and only an annoyance for adults. Choose one that fits snugly on the mattress and helps hold the mattress pad (if you have one) in place.

This is where you can personalize the style to whatever you like. Have fun, choose a fabric, color, and pattern you like. You can even get several different ones to add to the fun. Just make sure they stay put and don’t easily slide off the mattress, creating a hazard for wiggly babies.

Wearable Blankets

To keep a baby warm and comfy in varying temperatures, you can dress them appropriately in clothes, but without layers. Another alternative is to use a wearable blanket or sleep sack. These blankets have room at the bottom to allow babies to move their legs freely while still remaining covered up as if they are under a blanket. However, they are enclosed and fit over a baby’s shoulders to keep them secure and in place throughout the squirming and tossing and turning a baby does while sleeping.

Keep in mind that babies don’t have to be “bundled up” any more than you would in the same room. If you are ok in shorts and a t-shirt, so is your baby. If you are wrapped in a blanket, it is likely time to use a blanket sleeper or sleep sack to keep your baby warm. Don’t overheat your baby though, as this is a risk factor for SIDS.
